Multi-disciplinary and intersectional artist

Antonio Mendez

Bio

Anthony Méndez, a Cuban-American artist from Miami, is known for his versatile body of work that seamlessly blends performances with emerging technologies. His portfolio encompasses live and virtual-reality performances, drag, video, print media, and queer community activism. Drawing from an unconventional background as a technical tailor, Méndez infuses his performances with captivating compositions, prints, and textures.

At the core of his artistry lies his drag persona, Queef Latina, a potent force challenging chauvinism within Latinx cultures, notably in Florida's diverse landscape. Méndez derives inspiration from ancestral Cuban tales, the Roman-Catholic iconography, and subversive queer culture.

Méndez strives to make visual art, performance art, and drag accessible to diverse audiences, transcending age, race, gender, and socioeconomic boundaries with the use of augmented and virtual reality. This fusion of realities creates safe spaces for marginalized communities and offers viewers novel ways to experience art. His artistic mission is to unify communities and provide visibility and respect to the often unseen and unheard.

Anthony has received recognition for his work, including being a winner of the 2021 Ellies Creator Award presented by Oolite Arts. Their art has also been featured and supported by the Perez Art Museum, Institute of Contemporary Art Miami, Fountainhead Studios, NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale, Mana Contemporary (Residency), Young at Art Museum, New World School of the Arts, Scope Art Fair, XR Hub Gallery, Red Bull Artists Fellowship, The Bass Art Museum, Miami-Dade County Public Library, Bushwig Festival, Paper Magazine, Telemundo, and NBC6.
