Pilgram 2.0: Naked Link (#DataViz)

2016
Printed Drawings On Cotton Paper
21 x 15 inches each one

Pilgram 1.0’s first iteration (2015) was made as an intervention in the recently-opened Internet hotspots in Havana. Naked Link 2.0, a new iteration, (2016) explores and reveals the invisible physical infrastructures that tie Miami (US) and Havana (Cuba) internet connection, by monitoring and analyzing the packet data traffic between the two countries, and scanning the IP number segments given to Cuba by ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) between 1997 and 2014.

The piece is a reflection of the existing infrastructure of communication, displaying how the flow of information between the two countries takes place nowadays. It is meant to reveal mutations in the Internet connectivity of both countries that otherwise wouldn’t be seen with the naked eye. Given the usual miscommunication and tensions between these countries, the piece works as a metaphor for a potential change.

Part of the future outcomes of the piece will be a VR representation of this data, which will also be represented on the web browser.

Another key component is a book containing the technical description of the process to create the piece, as well as information on all the Internet companies that participate in this physical infrastructure between the US and Cuba. The book will only be disclosed for specific projects or after the acquisition of the piece.
